Following the critical success of their debut album A New Light, The Mancunium Consort returns with Still Waters, a captivating exploration of reflection, memory and wonder. Founded in Manchester in 2023 and already recognised as one of the UK's most exciting emerging vocal ensembles, The Mancunium Consort has quickly built a reputation for expressive performances, imaginative programming and a rapidly growing international audience. Still Waters showcases the ensemble at its most compelling, weaving together music from across six centuries in a programme that feels both timeless and strikingly contemporary.
From the serene beauty of Stanford's The Blue Bird and Brahms' In stiller Nacht to the atmospheric sound worlds of Whitacre, Gorecki and Sarah Quartel Smith, the album invites listeners into moments of contemplation, remembrance and quiet transcendence. Traditional favourites including Shenandoah and The Water of Tyne sit naturally alongside Renaissance masterpieces by Tallis and modern choral classics, creating a richly textured listening experience that rewards repeated listening.
A particular highlight is a newly commissioned arrangement of The Water of Tyne by Blake Morgan of VOCES8, written especially for the ensemble and recorded here for the first time. Rooted in tradition yet full of fresh insight, it perfectly encapsulates the artistic vision behind this outstanding release.
