Description
Arcangelo Corelli's fame as both violinist and composer was widespread throughout seventeenth century Europe. His surviving works are relatively few in number but far-reaching in influence, both in terms of performance practice and compositional technique. The twelve Opus 5 Sonatas for violin and continuo are notable for their juxtaposition of slow movements of a lyrical, elegant beauty akin to the human voice, and brilliant, technically demanding fast movements. Frenchman Fran?ºois Fernandez makes his debut recording for Naxos alongside experienced harpsichordist Glen Wilson, whose previous discs of Couperin (8555936) and Buxtehude (8557413) on Naxos both scooped a maximum three stars in the Penguin Guide.
