In a number of interviews that Monty Alexander has given on the occasion of his 70th birthday on June 6, 2014, he has related how deeply impressed he had been with MPS and its Schwarzwald Studios, especially its owner. He explained to the SZ magazine that, "At that time no one had as good a studio sound as Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer." Oscar Peterson had recommended Alexander to his German friend Brunner-Schwer.
The 17 year old Alexander had emigrated from Jamaica to the United States and immediately caused a furor as piano wunderkind. Over the next years, he recorded several albums at MPS's studio in Villingen, Germany. Alexander eventually returned home to play music with the kids he had grown up with. Out of this grew an album that combined soul and jazz with Caribbean folklore: "Rass".
With its origin in Kingston, the word is a Caribbean expletive that is used for emphasis in virtually any situation. Since there were three percussionists that were taking care of the necessary rhythmic needs, Alexander found it necessary to switch to a Fender-Rhodes electric piano instead of the accustomed Steinway or Bösendorfer he recorded on in Villingen.
Ernest Ranglin is also on hand for the Jamaican recording session. The 1974 liner notes call Ranglin "probably the most undiscovered guitarist in the world", but Ranglin would also become famous. He recorded his latest CD at the age of 82 in the USA in 2014. Monty Alexander's latest album, "Harlem-Kingston-Express", contains jazz-tinged interpretations of Calypso and Reggae melodies.
