Description
The record showcases some of the UK's fastest-emerging musical talents – Ruth Goller (acoustic and electric bass), Alice Zawadzki (vocals & violin), Marek Dorcik (drums) with BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shabaka Hutchings (tenor sax & bass clarinet) - and also features six award-winning writers, commissioned to write short stories/poems based on new pieces by composer, guitarist and bandleader Moss Freed.
The writers are National Book Award-winner Colum McCann, Naomi Alderman (winner of the Orange Prize for New Writers and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year), Joe Dunthorne (author of Submarine, now a major film), Lawrence Norfolk (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award and Budapest Festival Prize for Literature), Independent Foreign Fiction Prize-shortlisted Lebanese author, Hanan al Shaykh and Time Out's Rising Star, James Miller.
The CD and accompanying book represent a collision of sound and story, a marriage of music and literature. What started out as an album of original compositions has been expanded to a deluxe art object, with the addition of six new pieces of fiction, each one written as a response to a particular track on What Do You See When You Close Your Eyes?
