Description
2006 recording by the legendary pianist and composer Michael Garrick, showcasing the 'New Quartet' he'd been playing with since 2001. The programme of mostly originals includes a tribute to John Coltrane, to commemorate Trane's 80th anniversary, and a celebration of late sax legend Joe Harriott that features Martin Hathaway on alto sax.
"Michael Garrick's elegant quartet, with saxophonist Martin Hathaway, bassist Paul Moylan and drummer Alan Jackson, has been around since 2001 - two years before the 70-year-old British composer-pianist was reclaimed for a young audience by Gilles Peterson's Impressed compilation. Superficially, this album could have been made any time in the past 40 years (swing, Latin grooves, solos-in-turn), but if Garrick is unimpressed by fashion, his playing and tunes retain a seductive sparkle. Floating on Summer has an appropriately airy Garrick solo; Trane's Mood an Afro Blue-like drive; a celebration of late sax legend Joe Harriott sets prodding piano chords against Hathaway's wheeling alto; and the same player is eloquent on a subtle clarinet exploration of Duke Ellington's Azure. Garrick regulars and post-Impressed converts will be the main audience, but the world needs reminding that a UK jazz groundbreaker is still at work." - John Fordham, The Guardian
