Description
This 1978 live recording by the late pianist Michael Garrick is appearing here on CD for the first time. Garrick was a key figure on the British jazz scene for more than five decades and joining him is the tenor saxophonist Don Weller, whose big sound is heard at its best on five long improvisations on classic jazz standards. The set is completed with a Michael Garrick original which demonstrates his widely-acknowledged abilities as a composer.
Michael Garrick made his name in the 1960s when he joined the exciting Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet, helping to elevate it to even greater heights. Prior to that he had been playing his own music with a quintet that included the great Joe Harriott and Shake Keane and was deeply involved in the poetry-and-jazz movement, as well as creating jazz pieces for liturgical purposes and for performance in religious venues. Right up to his death at the age of 78 in 2011 he was committed to jazz education and composing, recording and performing with both small groups and big bands.
Personnel: Michael Garrick (piano), Don Weller (tenor saxophone), Chris Laurence (bass), Alan Jackson (drums)
