Description
Originally released on vinyl in 1976 on JAPO/ECM, this is the second CD by Swiss jazz-rock sextet Magog to be issued on TCB.
Popular throughout Europe in the '70s, Magog played all the major festivals of the time and their appearance at Montreux in 1973 resulted in the release of their first album, reissued as 'Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1973'.
Magog's approach reflected an all-embracing attitude to music making that was akin to other groups of the time, groups such as Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band and the more improvisatory explorations of early Weather Report. Magog had their own very distinct personality though, and like British jazz-rock groups of the early 1970's, are clearly deserving of rediscovery.
This second release, a studio production, was recorded a few months after their '73 Montreux appearance and features, what was then, all new repertoire from individual members of the sextet. In contrast to their live album with its extended spaces for free improvising, this studio production is based more on written compositions and fixed forms.
Personnel: Hans Kennel (trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion), Andy Scherrer (saxophones, percussion), Paul Haag (trombone, percussion), Klaus Koenig (piano, electric piano, percussion), Peter Frei (bass), Peter Schmidlin (drums)
