Landscapes, Locality and Lost Music. M G Boulter has quietly amassed a body of well crafted and affecting songs over the past decade; songs cherished by his growing number of fans. Equally so are his tour diaries and essays on the psycho-geography of his hometown of Southend, Essex. It's apt therefore that Hudson Records is releasing a beautifully bound hardback book that collects M G's essays, as well as an enclosed CD featuring four EPs not previously released on physical media, including a new EP Peasant Songs, a collection of songs inspired by the Peasants Revolt of 1381 (which had its roots in the dark Essex soil).
Interspersed with the collages of artist Adam Gardner, the essays in this collection read like a wonder show of stories and the hidden histories of a seaside town with topics ranging from Indiana Jones actors, lost seaside attractions and the prehistoric sites of Southend to how the local rat man myth is linked to Southend's 1960s Queensway Development.
Gathered with these written musings are four EPs: Blood Moon (2018), A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton (2022), Fan Fiction (2024) and the new EP Peasant Songs (2026). Charting M G's development as a songwriter and cataloguing his different musical approaches and collaborators (including members of Elbow, The Froe and John Bramwell's band), these EPs continue the arc of this project with captivating story songs of a location and the continual accretion of its tales.
The book includes a CD and download of all 4 EPs, as well as lyrics and essays by M G Boulter.
