Jean-Baptiste Lully's marriage of the Italian style of writing with a very French idiom fashioned a completely new school of composition that was to have a major impact on the history of classical music. His operas set new standards of elegance and beauty, while his sacred music, including the motets for the Chapel Royal, drew from him many of his most inspired scores. This disc, the third volume of his complete motets, includes two impressive settings of Psalms contained in his book of 'Grands Motets'. They were among the most elaborate sacred works of his time, calling for double chorus and orchestra, and display Lully's genius in creating immediately attractive melody. Composed for less extravagant forces, the Laudate, is a score of reverential piety.
