  • Description

Simax Classics celebrates the 80th birthday of the notable Norwegian pianist Liv Glaser with a double CD devoted to her fortepiano releases - music by Mozart, Clementi, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Grieg, and a selection of brand new recordings of gorgeous waltzes by Schubert, Schumann and Ravel.

Glaser opens this "fortepiano cavalcade" with movements from Mozart Piano Sonatas ("he 'kicked' me into starting to play the fortepiano, and has been my companion since I was a child!"), sonatinas by Clementi and pieces from Schumann's Kinderszenen, on a variety of restored and replica instruments. She accompanies soprano Helene Wold in songs by Mendelssohn, the baritone Per Vollestad in excerpts from Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin, and her younger brother, cellist Ernst Simon Glaser, in Schumann's Fantasiestücke.

"The Ravel waltzes [Valses nobles et sentimentales]", says Glaser, "will for me personally always be linked to Paris and my beloved teacher Vlado Perlemuter who studied all Ravel's works with the composer. Schubert - who composed a countless number of waltzes - was Ravel's source of inspiration. Brahms of course loved Schubert, as well as edited some of his late works, which thereby gives CD 2 a Viennese leitmotif."

Since making her debut in 1960, Liv Glaser has been recognized as being among the elite of Norwegian pianists, with countless television and radio concerts and performances. She has toured extensively and given concerts in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. She has taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music since its founding in 1973 and became Professor there in 1994. Her many awards include HM King's Order of Merit 1965, Lindeman Prize 2004 and Grieg Prize 2014.

Personnel: Liv Glaser (fortepiano), Helene Wold (soprano), Per Vollestad (baritone), Ernst Simon Glaser (cello)
