  • Description

In autumn 1624 Wolfgang Wilhelm, Count of Neuburg and Duke of Bavaria, travelled to the court of Madrid, where he stayed for half a year.

He must have been overwhelmed by the extraordinary music that was played in the castle and brought back a very special souvenir of this visit: the copyist of the Spanish Royal Chapel compiled the Cancionero de Sablonara, a collection of the best music sung at this court, especially for him.

The collection is preserved in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and is today an important source for the musical heritage of Spain in the 17th century. It contains secular polyphonic tonos, which are Spanish songs that flourished in the late 17th century. Most of their melodies and rhythms find their origin in romance novels, folk songs and dances from oral tradition. They are witnesses of an exuberant soundscape that surrounded the festivities of a colourful society at the Spanish court during this period.
