Although Kirsten Flagstad had sung exclusively in Scandinavia for two decades, her d?®but at the Met in February 1935 was a landmark occasion and confirmed her status as one of the great Wagnerian sopranos of the 20th century. This disc features Flagstad's complete 1937 recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, as well as her first recording of Grieg's song-cycle 'Haugtussa' (The Mountain Maid) made in 1940. A comparative rarity at the time, 'Haugtussa' is sung on this recording with incomparable exuberance and freshness of voice.
