  • Description

Following the critical success of The Game, vocalist Rachael Calladine returns with Soho Elegy, a collection of original songs written by long-standing collaborators pianist Dr Adrian York and guitarist Pat McCarthy, alongside two compositions by Calladine herself.

Calladine is joined by her regular quartet of McCarthy, bassist Andy Tytherleigh and drummer Si Potts, with York on keyboards and James McMillan appearing as guest trumpeter. Produced by Claire Martin OBE and McMillan, the album brings together jazz, soul and classic popular song through exquisite melodies and intimate storytelling.

The atmospheric opening track 'Walk of Shame' explores the loneliness and vulnerability behind the search for love. The title track recalls the Soho jazz world in which Calladine immersed herself during the 1990s, while 'The Golden Hour' draws on her experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, connecting medicine's critical first hour after trauma with the emotional process of letting go. Elsewhere, the album moves from the playful 'Fashionista' and lyrical jazz waltz 'Falling' to the blues and soul of Calladine's self-penned 'Gone Too Long'. It closes with 'No More', written nearly 20 years ago and now given its first recording, a final message of hope.

"I wanted the songs to feel familiar," says Calladine. "The album reflects the jazz, pop and soul I've loved throughout my career. Above all, I wanted to make an honest record that jazz audiences would enjoy, but that anyone could connect with."

    "Absolutely wonderful." - Madeline Bell
