Description
This is the third release in Lake's 'A Jazz Club Session With' series, based on recordings made at The Dancing Slipper Jazz Club in Nottingham.
It is appropriate that the series should include Ken Colyer's band as he was one of pivotal figures of British Traditional Jazz. His 1954 recording 'Club Session With Colyer' has long been regarded as one of his most sought after albums and this could prove a worthy successor. It features the early 1960s line-up with Sammy Rimington (who has become one of the UK's leading reed players) and was one of the best periods for the band. It is extremely well recorded, it is a working band playing very well in the New Orleans style of shifting ensembles (as opposed to the 'string of solos' style) and features several tunes never recorded by Colyer anywhere before.
The Colyer 'cult' should never be underestimated and this release demonstrates why he is held in such esteem.
