Description
Described as "gritty, inventive and wonderfully assured" (San Francisco Chronicle) and praised for its "instrumental sensuality" (Chicago Tribune), Composer and pianist Anthony Cheung's music reveals an interest in the ambiguity of sound sources and constantly shifting transformations of tuning and timbre. Cheung writes music that explores the senses, a wide palette of instrumental play and effect, improvisational traditions, reimagined musical artifacts, and multiple layers of textual meaning.
Cheung's debut album for KAIROS features three major works for ensemble: his piano concerto, performed by Ueli Wiget and Ensemble Modern, and two large-scale pieces recorded by Ensemble Dal Niente and Ensemble Musikfabrik. As Cheung celebrates his 40th birthday in 2022, this album presents a composer who is steadily increasing his presence on major international new music stages.
"An intriguing album fusing the traditional and contemporary." – Gramophone
