Description
Born in North Carolina in 1892, Charlie Poole, like Uncle Dave Macon, Gid Tanner and others, was one of the founding fathers of recorded country/old time music.
His recordings are classed among the best of 1920s rural American music. With his distinctive voice and innovative banjo playing, Poole was almost a legend in his own lifetime.
Add the fact that his group, The North Carolina Ramblers contained, at times, some equally accomplished musicians and you have the wonderful recordings that make up this collection. Also included are a number of cuts by Poole's group, fronted by one of his cohorts and one-time manager, Roy Harvey.
As with all great recording artists Charlie Poole left a rich musical legacy; he also has to be credited with his banjo playing that would influence later performers, most notably many a bluegrass musician who would rightly pay tribute to Poole's influence.
These 96 tracks, recorded between July 1925 and September 1930, are accompanied by an extensively detailed essay about Poole's life and the recording sessions.
