  • Description

In the late 60s, Johnny Cash began to make the transition from the remorseless Man In Black to an altogether more family-friendly figure suitable for prime-time TV viewing. After hosting 58 episodes of The Johnny Cash Show across 1969-1971, the country icon took a break from the cameras, only to return in the late 70s with a series of Christmas specials. Featuring guests Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis, Cash's first seasonal spectacular, aired in 1977, went some way towards recreating the magic of the legendary 1956 "Million Dollar Quartet" recording session at Sun Studios (Elvis Presley, the fourth member of that informal ensemble had died in August, before Cash's Christmas shoot), while a cover of John Sebastian's 'Darlin' Companion', sung as a duet between Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, offered a reminder of the scintillating chemistry the duo displayed on Cash's legendary At San Quentin album.

With renditions of Christmas classics and Cash's own musings on the holiday season, Christmas Special Broadcast 1977 is a gift that keeps on giving.
