Although he appeared in many films alongside Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Tex Ritter, he was never a Hollywood star; his debut in the movies was with Jimmy Wakely in 1939 but he is best remembered as an accomplished performer and prolific song-writer. In 1940, Johnny was signed to Columbia records and began recording any of his own compositions, perennials like "Tomorrow Never Comes", "I'll Step Aside"and many others. By the time of his premature death in 1978, he was credited with having written over 500 songs.Despite his early roots, he progressed with Country music, even succeeding in the 1950s in a Rock 'N' Roll vein.
