  • Description

These three trios must have formed part of the repertoire played in Weimar during Bach's time as Court Organist and Chamber Musician at the Ducal Court. Johann Friedrich Fasch was born near Weimar, and was one of the most significant musical contemporaries of Bach, who arranged the first two movements of Fasch's Trio Sonata in C minor for organ, The organ transcription of the fourth section of Francois Couperin's L'Imperiale from Les nations, which Bach titled 'Aria' and here transcribed for two harpsichords, can be regarded as an example of his mission to absorb as many national styles as possible. Interestingly, the final section of this wonderfully attractive rondeau is shortened by Couperin, whereas Bach's transcription extends this section to its full length - a feature I have adopted in this arrangement for two harpsichords. Bach's organ Trio in D minor (BWV 583), with its curious thematic relationship with the organ fugue in G minor (BWV542/2), can be regarded as a supplement to my arrangements of Bach's Six Trio Sonatas (BWV525-530) (NMP1094-1099).
