Description
The Light Ahead, by vocalist, composer and lyricist Sarah L King, combines jazz and neo-soul with singer-songwriter candour and flashes of disco-era glamour. "I wanted to write something uplifting," says King. "All that matters is today - let's focus on that. Stop longing, stop wondering... just be, and enjoy."
Following her critically acclaimed debut Fire Horse (2024), The Light Ahead features eight original compositions alongside four carefully chosen covers: Stevie Wonder's 'Overjoyed', Nicola Conte's 'Like Leaves in the Wind', Clifton Davis' 'Never Can Say Goodbye', and 'Just a Little Lovin'' by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The opening track, 'The Heron', sets the tone of the album with a groove-led sense of mystery and yearning, while 'Inner Child' finds liberation through honesty and self-connection. 'April' captures the hope of spring after winter, its 5/4 rhythm suggesting forward motion towards light. Elsewhere, 'Ain't Gonna Rain' channels empowerment through releasing others' expectations, and 'We've Gotta Find a Way' addresses collective responsibility for climate change through a neo-soul lens. 'Never Can Say Goodbye' reimagines the Gloria Gaynor disco classic through a jazz-inflected groove, while 'Just a Little Lovin'' and Nicola Conte's 'Like Leaves in the Wind' add warmth and philosophical closure to the album's journey.
Produced by Claire Martin OBE, the sound of The Light Ahead is shaped by an outstanding core trio: Laurence Cottle (electric bass), Jamie Murray (drums) and Jim Watson (piano and keyboards). Additional featured musicians include James McMillan (trumpet), Tommy Emmerton (electric guitar) and Chris Traves (trombone).
The album's title encapsulates its core message of optimism - representing hope in difficult times, personal truth and the literal glow of the stage. My first album had a searching and longing to it," reflects King. "The Light Ahead feels more celebratory, it's my gratitude for the now."
