Description
Celebrating his centenary in 2021, Retrospective presents this splendid collection of the best of Gordon MacRae (1921-1986). He was the full-throated, handsome baritone, best remembered for the classic movie musicals Oklahoma! (1955) and Carousel (1956), but also a hugely popular recording artist from the late 40s onwards. It’s Magic (the title of his first big solo hit) is Retrospective’s anthology of his 24 finest tracks from the 10 years of his glorious heyday. There are 17 solos including many top showstoppers such as So In Love (Kiss Me, Kate), Younger Than Springtime (South Pacific), Ol’ Man River (Show Boat) and Stranger In Paradise (Kismet), and a magnificently ‘outdoor’ Mule Train (his biggest UK hit). Even more successful than his solo recordings was his great partnership with the smoothly stylish Jo Stafford (who has a 2CD set Make Love To Me on RTS 4112). There are five of their wonderful duets included here, among them the million-selling Whispering Hope and chart-topping My Darling, My Darling. The selection finishes with his great numbers from Oklahoma! (Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’) and Carousel (Soliloquy), with those two timeless duets with Shirley Jones: People Will Say We’re In Love and If I Loved You. The verdict on Gordon MacRae’s legacy? It’s Magic.
