Description
'Abre Alas' (Make Way) serves as an invaluable testament to Brazilian musician/composer Ivan Lins' musical prowess, and this collaboration with the late Swiss saxophonist George Robert and his jazz orchestra stands as a testament to the cross-cultural magic that music weaves, transcending borders and connecting artists across continents.
Recorded in 2009, this is the first ever physical format release of 'Abre Alas' .
"Ivan's music has been a part of my life. His lyricism, his unique sense of melody and harmony, have inspired me for many years," wrote George Robert, explaining the desire to record this album with his prestigious George Robert Jazz Orchestra, with Ivan's participation on piano and vocals (in Portuguese!).
Whether in the rhythmic "Boa Nova" or the melodious "Velas icadas," George Robert's big band consistently uncovers new nuances in Ivan's music. In addition to two inspired instrumental themes by George Robert in the Latin and romantic vein, also embraced by Ivan - "Mi corazon" and "Cancion de amor" - the music of Ivan Lins left the orchestra with only one task: to add a standard among standards to the repertoire. Enter "Over the Rainbow," reimagined by Bob Mintzer's arrangement as if it were an Ivan original--contemporary, intricate, and delightful.
Ivan, now in his 80th year spends half the year in Brazil and the other half traveling the globe. Whether with his band or performing alongside jazz or classical orchestras, Ivan's musical journey continues. This album released 15 years after its recording, captures the moment when Ivan and George began to truly use the orchestra as an instrument - the very best instrument for the finest music, as evident here.
