Fabrice Moreau, a major drummer on the European jazz scene (Marc Copland, Stephane Kerecki, Airelle Besson, Jean-Philippe Viret, etc.) renowned for his virtuosity and minimalism, unveils new compositions for this, album, 'Ignorant As The Dawn'. While we easily find the characteristics that have formed the drummer's reputation, we also rediscover his talent as a composer through music that is more lyrical and romantic than that of his previous album, 'Double Portrait' (2019), which received critical acclaim.
A drummer of ellipsis and implication, Fabrice Moreau has made the almost choreographic grace of his instrumental mastery the very foundation of his approach to composition - one of the most original in contemporary jazz. For the past seven years, Moreau has been deeply engaged in an intense collaboration, both human and artistic, in a quintet with Ricardo Izquierdo on tenor saxophone, Nelson Veras on guitar, Jozef Dumoulin on piano, and Matyas Szandai on double bass. Following the tragic and premature passing of Szandai though, Moreau chose not to replace him in the ensemble but to continue the journey as a quartet.
Centering their musical approach around the vacant space left by Szandai, Moreau and his companions create a sound rich in openness and silence, making the dynamics of emptiness the true dramatic engine of a collective expression that is, paradoxically, intensely lyrical.
