My Favorite Things was one of John Coltrane’s bestselling LPs ever. Recorded by Atlantic Records in less than three days during several marathon sessions, it produced enough music that would later be issued on subsequent albums: Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane’s Sound, and Coltrane Legacy.
“My Favorite Things”, the title tune, belongs to the Rodgers & Hammerstein hit musical The Sound of Music, which opened on Broadway on November 16, 1959. Prior to Coltrane’s interpretation of the song, Benny Goodman was among the first to give it a jazz setting, but it was Coltrane who brought “My Favorite Things” to the attention of the jazz world with the version contained here.
Apart from the bonus track ‘Exotica’, an original by Coltrane, the inclusion of compositions by Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin and Rogers & Hammerstein, this album is very much a salute to the ‘great American song book’.
