Description
Undergrünnen is a new explosive rock band started by Pål Jackman from Wunderkammer, and Per Steinar Lie and Ørjan Haaland from The Low Frequency in Stereo and Lumen Drones. With a fistful of krautrock, a big fistful of energy and a pinch of afrobeat in Norwegian, the trio supplies a special twist of how a rock trio should sound like.
Per Steinar from the band explains what Undergrunnen is about: We wanted to create a very intense band based in Haugesund, with roots in both primitive rock og afro rock. PÃ¥l has played in a band from Ivory Coast and I've been a roadie for Andy Brown and the Storm from Zimbabwe. Our ambition is to mix the African sound with the Norwegian language. Of course we emphasize that we play a Norwegian type of afro rock, and we regard it as a mix where MC5 touches African rhythms.
The album debut of Undergrunnen consists of 9 strong songs which all stem from jamming in the studio - boiled down to compact and catchy energy bombs that it will be impossible to stand still to. The album was recorded at Hauge Chess Club recording studio and mixed in ABC Studio in Etne + Broen Studio in Bergen. Mastered by Jason Emberton (Nick Cave++). MC5 meets afrobeat in Norwegian!
A bit about the band's background: Singer and guitarist Pål Jackman is also band leader of the critically acclaimed Wunderkammer. Per Steinar Lie and Ørjan Haaland started The Low Frequency in Stereo which have released 5 studio albums on labels like Rune Grammofon and Germany's SPV. They have been nominated to the Norwegian "Grammy" (Spellemannprisen) with two albums: "The Last Temptation of..." in 2006 og "Pop Obskura" in 2014. The Low Frequency in Stereo have played at Øyafestivalen's main stage and the Dour Festival, and been praised by people like Michael Stipe and David Fricke after their trips to the USA. They both also play in the psychedelic drone band Lumen Drones which recently made their debut on ECM Records with a critically acclaimed album that was awarded with 4/5 stars in Mojo.
