Description
'In Galway' is the latest live CD from the prolific Sharon Shannon who is joined on the CD and DVD combo by Dublin multi-instrumentalist, Alan Connor.
This duo produces no small acoustic sound. Connor whose background is firmly in rock and blues (citing Rory Gallagher as a big influence) is equally proficient on piano and electric guitar. He also plays stomp, which creates a driving groove and with the use of loops creates a big brash sound.
The pair have a natural spark and this has built into a fantastic musical friendship over the last two years on the road. The show is full of joy and verve and a DVD of this uplifting show was inevitable. Although the line-up is in contrast to her last two studio albums (Saints and Scoundrels in 2009 which featured her big band and various guests including Shane McGowan and Imelda May, and Flying Circus 2012 which was recorded with the 52 piece RTE Concert Orchestra) the show is no less powerful and refocuses on Sharon the performer.
The collection filmed at O'Connor Famous Pub in Salthill, Galway which has been Shannon's hometown for many years sees her working through some of her standard hits from her back catalogue including material from her first album which has not been in her set list for many years including Coridinio and the Woodchoppers (featuring Shannon on fiddle) In other medleys James Browne's March ( written by Mike McGoldrick) is paired with Shannon's showstopper The Mouth of the Tobique and elsewhere Connor rips up Donal Lunny's The Cavan Potholes by playing guitar and piano simultaneously.
The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status throughout the world and has made the much-maligned accordion 'cool' in her home country. She is renowned for her collaborations, not just in Irish traditional music, but through all musical genres, Hip-Hop, Cajun, Country, Classical and Rap. Having recorded and toured with a who's who of the Irish and Global Music Industry, including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead O'Connor, Jackson Browne, John Prine ,Steve Earle, The RTE Concert Orchestra, The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, Alison Krauss and Shane MacGowan - a list that is testament to Sharon's versatility as well as talent. 2014 saw Sharon play live to in excess of 250,000 people worldwide performing at Womadelaide, Womad New Zealand, Beautiful Days, Volvo Ocean Race.
It's not just the live side where Sharon excels, she is the biggest selling traditional music solo artiste in Ireland with domestic and international units of her CDs amounting to one million sales. She has entertained US Presidents Clinton at the White House and Obama in Dublin and Irish Presidents Robinson and MacAleese on presidential visits to Poland and Australia respectively. More recently she played for The Sultan of Brunei, at the Basement in Sydney.
She has worked with Hollywood film directors Jim Sheridan in a production of The Playboy of the Western World and played a cameo role in Neil Jordan's film Ondine alongside Colin Farrell. The genre-defying star has had multi-platinum album sales and has had several number one albums, singles and DVDs in her home country. Her album Galway Girl went 4 times platinum in Ireland with the title track winning her the Meteor award two years running for most downloaded song.
The youngest ever recipient of the Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award, Sharon's music has been featured in several Hollywood movies including PS I love you, and the award-winning Bulmers TV commercial campaign. A prolific composer, Sharon continues to defy genres and has recently released an album of original music recorded with the RTE Concert Orchestra called Flying Circus.
Currently touring the UK as well as working on a book on her life, Sharon is a passionate animal lover and does a lot of voluntary work and fundraising for various animal rescues and supports many other charities. Sharon has recently become an ambassador for Building Of Hope, a charity that brings practical help, education support and care to young people in The Third World.
