Mary Black has been one of Ireland's most successful and influential singers since the late 1970s. She has won numerous awards and produced several albums that have achieved gold and platinum status. Now known mainly for her distinguished solo career, Mary has also performed with various bands – most notably with De Dannan.

In the early 1970s, a group of traditional musicians played in The Humbert Inn, Castlebar and the group became known as General Humbert. The original group included Mick Black who, in 1975, invited his sister Mary to join. The group then went on to perform extensively throughout Ireland, as well as touring the UK and Europe. The group released two albums, General Humbert, (Dolphin 1975) and General Humbert 11 (Gael Linn 1978). The two albums brought Mary to the attention of some of the leading figures in the Irish music industry and paved the way for her solo career. She has since performed and recorded with some of the world's leading artists including Van Morrison, Joan Baez and Emmy Lou Harris.

The Humbert Inn was named after the French General Jean Humbert who located his headquarters within the building during the United Irishmen rebellion of 1798. After the Rising, a banquet was held in the Humbert Inn and John Moore was declared first President of Connaught. The Humbert Inn extended its hospitality for over 200 years, finally closing its doors in 2006.
