Description
Ray Barbee has been known to comment on his life's endeavours as a sort of "Jack of all trades, master of none", for or those closest to him, this couldn't be farther from the truth. With a professional skateboarding career that has spanned 36 years, a music career dating back to the release of Triumphant Procession in 2001, and his work over the last decade with his Leica M6 camera, he has continued to curate and create, always with his trademark smile.
Barbee began his skateboarding career in the late '80s, and as he tells it, Stacy Peralta bought him his first guitar after an amateur event. Ray's guitar playing ability has continued to evolve and develop with a wide breadth of influences. Whether it's his own solo albums: In Full View and Tiara For Computer, his collaboration with fellow skaters Chuck Treece, Tommy Guerrero, and Matt Rodriguez in the BlkTop Project, his suit wearing days with the Mattson 2, or simply cranking out music for a skate video with John Herndon and his son Nolan, Ray is always down to create great music.
Sometimes it's hard to keep up with everything Ray's got cooking. Whether he's at the skatepark, in the dark room, or at home jamming in his garage, dude is always finding joy in the moment. Little Postcards from Home encapsulates the history, the journey, and the art of being Ray Barbee.
"Growing up in the 80s, I loved all the hip hop and electronic music that used drum machines. The Roland TR808 is my favourite from that time. Although I've heard the TR808 with various instruments over the years, I've rarely, if ever, heard it with guitar-based music. I got excited to write post-punk era guitar music using the 808 sounds for the drums. That, along with the desire to record it at home on an 8-track tape recorder and an Akai drum sampler is how this humble EP, Little Postcards from Home, came to be." - Ray Barbee
