    Ignacio Jerusalem left Naples as a young violinist and rose, by the 1750s, to become maestro de capilla of Mexico City Cathedral -- the most prestigious musical post in colonial Spanish America. There he forged a sound entirely his own: Italianate melodic warmth wedded to the ceremonial splendor of New Spain's devotional life. This recording, largely world-premiere, gathers arias, sacred duets, and a dramatic Lamentation for Holy Friday drawn from cathedral archives in Durango and Mexico City. Performed by the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla with Alfonso Sebastian directing from the harpsichord, the soprano is Ollala Aleman joined by mezzo Lucia Caihuelae.
