Description
Despite her powerful, no-prisoners-taken voice, Helen Shapiro was still merely a fourteen year-old schoolgirl in a gymslip when she exploded onto the UK Pop scene in 1961. This compilation features her first seven singles, the 'Jazzy Helen' EP, and the 'Tops With M'e LP, all of which were substantial UK and worldwide hits during 1961-62.
Helen enjoyed almost unprecedented initial success, her first four discs - 'Don't Treat Me Like A Child', 'You Don't Know', 'Walkin' Back To Happiness' and 'Tell Me What He Said' - reaching #3, #1, #1, and #2 in the UK respectively.
She quickly became established as a major international star, notably in Europe, The Middle East and Australia, and global sales of her early 45s all topped a million.
Helen went on to enjoy a long, full career, later appearing in cabaret and stage musicals, and enjoying a couple of decades as a respected jazz singer, before eventually turning to Gospel music after becoming a Messianic Jew.
