Description
Ilmari Hannikainen, born in 1892, was a Finnish composer and an internationally renowned pianist. He grew up in the provincial town of Jyvaskyla in central Finland as part of a very musical family. It went without saying that Ilmari Hannikainen showed considerable musical talent at an early age. He was not only interested in playing the piano but also displayed a burning desire to compose, and in these early years he penned numerous piano pieces and songs. In the autumn of 1911, he moved from Jyvaskyla to Helsinki to enrol at both Helsinki University and the Helsinki Music Institute. There he began studying composition under the tutelage of Erkki Melartin (187 5-1937). He subsequently also studied composition under Franz Schreker in Vienna.
