Description
The first in an ambitious series of albums representing the finest Welsh solos, collected and sung by popular Angelsey tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones.
Tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones hails from the Isle of Anglesey and is a member of that growing band of Welsh classical singers who are making a big impression on the recording world. Like most of his fellow artists, Gwyn works mainly in opera, but loves to turn to other forms of music, especially so the rich vein of Welsh solos. It has been a long-standing ambition of his to produce a collection of these songs, to show the breadth and variety of the Welsh solo tradition.
Gwyn was finally persuaded to embark on this mission through conversations with the late historian Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards, a passionate advocate of the Welsh singing tradition. One of the early heroes of this tradition was Eos Morlais (Robert Rees, of Dowlais near Merthyr, 1841 – 1892), and Hywel maintained that Eos' favourite encore was the folk song "Mentra Gwen". It is therefore as a small tribute to his memory that he includes it as the first song in this unique collection.
In his introduction to this, the first in a series of CD collections, Gwyn expresses his debt of gratitude to accompanist Annette Bryn Parri who contributed so much both at the piano and during the editing process.
