Description
The idea to commission Norwegian pieces for young Norwegian violinists came in 1990, inspired by the lack of contemporary music at the various violin competitions around the world. Many of the pieces on this Aurora release have been written especially for the violinist who plays them on this CD. The composers in this collection of nine pieces for solo violin are Dagfinn Koch, Gisle Kverndokk, Glenn Erik Haugland, Jan Erik Mikalsen, Ketil Hvoslef, Marcus Paus, Olav Anton Thommessen, Stale Kleiberg, and Synne Skouen.
The collaboration with the Norwegian Society of Composers that led to this recording ensured that the project was a big success, and when the Menuhin Competition was held in Oslo in 2010, several of the new works were mandatory for all competitors. The musicians on this recording are all results of the strong local musical work that is found in many places around Norway, from Alta in the north to Oslo in the south. Every summer since 1993 young musicians have had the opportunity to come together in Nord-Aurdal for one week of symphonic work. Alf Richard Kraggerud, the first leader of the Razumovsky Academy in London, is founder and artistic director of the festival.
