Description
staying the same in any way shape or form so, in this way, my evolution in music feels very spontaneous.”
The greatest artists are restless souls, in constant need of fresh inspiration. Once again, in 2021, the dark soul known as GOST is undergoing another dazzling transformation.
Erupting into the consciousness of music fans with self-released debut Skull in 2013, GOST soon acknowledged as a standard bearer for the then burgeoning synthwave movement, and for its untapped dark side, in particular. Armed with a sound that brimmed with seething synthesizers and overdriven digital kicks, this mutant ingenue was also noisily and undeniably affiliated with the metal underground, too. From the juddering pitch-black electro-perfection of Behemoth (2015) and Non Paradisi (2016) to the gleefully brutal digi-metal of Possessor (2018), this was music that electrified dancefloors and made heads bang with equal ferocity. Most recently, 2019’s widely acclaimed Valediction (GOST’s first with legendary metal imprint Century Media) showcased a wholesale reinvention: with strong post-punk hues and an intoxicating synth-pop aesthetic, GOST’s skills as a songwriter and vocalist were thrust to the forefront, with exhilarating results.
Meanwhile, GOST has become renowned as a potent and idiosyncratic live act. Over the last few years he has shared stages with Perturbator, 3TEETH, Mayhem, Carpenter Brut, Power Trip, The Black Dahlia Murder, Midnight, Pig Destroyer and many more, while several headline tours of North America and Europe have further consolidated that already robust reputation. Inevitably, recent touring plans were shelved during 2020’s pandemic fall-out, but GOST simply returned home and dedicated himself to evolving his skills in a variety of digital media. As a result, the arrival of new album Rites of Love and Reverence coincides with the holistic expansion of his vision.
“This album is the culmination of everything I have learned during the last eight years or so I have been making electronic music,” he states. “I feel like I have found my full confidence sonically and vocally with this album. Other than just feeling more in tune with how I am able to create, this album does explore some new sounds. I’ve pulled some new influences from industrial and post punk into what I was already creating.”
A huge step forward from the grim sheen of Valediction, the new GOST album offers an immersive journey fuelled by dystopian chaos and shrouded in futuristic mystery. Veering wildly from the coruscating battery of Bound By The Horror to the icy electro-rock of November Is Death, Rites of Love and Reverence is both an album of beautifully crafted songs and a fascinating and intuitively gothic journey, rich with thoughts of supernatural wickedness and real world retribution.
“The lyrics were inspired by witchcraft themes,” says the man himself. “It’s mainly about how witchcraft has affected women throughout history. Witch trials and the subsequent execution
