Description
In Russia, it is said that Pushkin is the sun of poetry, but Glinka is the Pushkin of music, an indication of the high esteem in which Glinka is held in his homeland. Glinka was briefly a student of John Field, during the Irish pianist-composer's time in St Petersburg and, throughout his life, Glinka's music remained heavily influenced by Field. As with the early works by Frédéric Chopin, who was also influenced by Field and Hummel, Glinka's piano works are written in this 'brilliant style', which might also be described as 'instrumental bel canto'.
