Georg Gebel was unquestionably an artist of genius. Only his tragic and untimely death, combined with his negligent care of his compositions, conspired to keep him unknown or forgotten outside his close circles. It was not until 2003, when CPO revived his St. John Passion, that music lovers were again able to admire his distinctive and novel voice, with its 'unparalleled' harmonies and 'modernist' melodies, and to savour his intricately wrought counterpoint. Now you can admire the premieres recording of his large-scale Christmas Cantatas of 1747.
