Description
Marking 12 years since their first release at the launch of Gare Du Nord Records, a run of ten albums (plus related EPs and more), and a cast of over thirty friends, bandmates and collaborators who have appeared on the records, this 23-track compilation is a concentrated summary of what Papernut Cambridge - the loose musical collective formed and fronted by Ian Button - has been all about.
The tracks include versions and rarities that weren't on the original vinyl albums, as well as spruced up mixes and edits specially for this compilation: something for the Papernut completist, as well as a potential primer for new listeners.
Papernut Cambridge releases over the last decade or so have earned comparisons to artists like T.Rex, The Kinks, World Party, Pavement, David Essex and more - Shindig! Magazine described the band as "a C86 version of The Faces".
Across the compilation Robert Halcrow, Robert Rotifer, Darren Hayman and Jack Hayter make up the regular instrument-swapping Papernut core of friends - but other contributors fly in. Button's old Death In Vegas bandmates Mat Flint and Terry Miles appear.....Helen McCookerybook and The Catenary Wires/Heavenly show up.....anti-folkers Paul Hawkins and Lucy Joplin...Sterling Roswell.....Button's old Sidcup friends Nick Tidmarsh and Paul Warren.
There's a joke that Papernut Cambridge is the band where Button calls in all the favours from the other bands he's played in......and another stolen, Warholian quip that sooner or later everyone will get the call to do something on a Papernut Cambridge record.
