  • Description

This new CD presents the world premiere recording of Giacomo Sarcuni's Missa a 5 Voci con stromenti.

Giacomo Sarcuni is likely a name that means very little to you, even though he achieved considerable fame as a composer and music teacher in Naples during the 18th century. Sarcuni's life and career has never been the subject of prolific research until quite recently; all that was known of him was that he was mentioned as maestro di cappella of the Archdiocese of Naples in Frederick Aquilina's Benigno Zarafa and the Neapolitan Galant Style. His name is not included in the major music encyclopaedias and his manuscripts have never been the subject of archival research.

In 2020, Belgian violinist Ann Cnop founded the professional ensemble le Pavillon de Musique based in Mechelen. From its inception, the ensemble has had a very clear mission; to let the general public at home and abroad rediscover forgotten and lost works from the Baroque era. The ensemble works with a permanent core of highly specialised professional musicians with extensive experience in early music, but also with varying line-ups depending on each project.

Ann Cnop has been active on the early music scene for many years and specialises in academic and historical research on well known and lesser-known composers and ancient manuscripts. Within this never-ending scholarly research, le Pavillon de Musique is the perfect partner. The ensemble brings the results of this to the listener with constant vigilance about quality and authenticity and with high-level performances.

Bart Vandewege is a Belgian composer, director, singer and producer, based in Madrid. His versatility as a musician is the result of his studies both of musical theory (harmony, counterpoint, composition) and of singing, flute and piano at Belgian conservatories. His musical exploration led him to specialize in early music, traditional music, contemporary music and jazz. Meanwhile, he has attended masterclasses in orchestral conducting with, among others, Salvador Mas and Arturo Tamayo, who guided him through the romantic and contemporary repertoire.

    Critical Acclaim

"Ann Cnop's research is truly pioneering and has resulted in this engaging CD of world premiere recordings. […] the vocalists of La Hispanoflamenca dig deep and really get inside this music." – Choir & Organ (5 STARS)
