  • Description

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this album from the Jazz legend. Contains the complete Herbie Hancock LP Takin' Off which marks the pianist's first album under his own name. All of the compositions are by the leader, who is backed by such stars as Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins. The album includes one of Hancock's best known compositions, 'Watermelon Man', which made it to the Top 100 on the pop charts, went on to become a Jazz standard, and would later be successfully covered by Mongo Santamaria. The three surviving alternate takes from the session and a rare trio version of 'Like Someone in Love' (recorded by Hancock live in St. Louis the previous year) have been added here as a bonus.

    Description

Herbie Hancock's classic 'Takin' Off' + 1 bonus track pressed on limited edition 180g red vinyl with its own unique sticker, includes specially prepared liner notes by the 'Penguin Guide to Jazz' writer, Brian Morton.

"As one musician of the time put it, once that record came out, you heard 'Watermelon Man' everywhere; kids were playing it on jukeboxes, it was on the radio, guys were trying to do it in the subway. You knew at once it was special." - Penguin Guiude To Jazz

"Very few jazzmen have had the chance to score such a tremendous hit with their first album as Herbie Hancock did with Takin' Off. It presented the bluesy hit 'Watermelon Man' to the world. The song would be covered by countless bands and performed in every imaginable style, subsequently becoming one of the most famous jazz standards. This is an album whose contrasts announce the exceptional diversity of an unparalleled career." - Jazz Magazine
