It entered the Billboard chart on May 28, 1955, rising to #2 where it remained for a total of 33 weeks. It was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984.

In many ways, the album is a personal reflection of the heartbreak of his doomed love affair with actress Ava Gardner. Sinatra's voice at this time had deepened and worn to the point where his delivery seems ravished and heartfelt, as if he were living the songs.

He began the year by touring Australia for the first time, and less than a week after returning, he would be back in Capitol's KHJ Studios to begin recording one of his most treasured albums, In the Wee Small Hours, a concept album which would enter the Billboardcharts on May 28, 1955. It would rise to #2 and remain on the chart for a total of 33 weeks and in 1984 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
