Description
Tenor Ernst Haefliger is one of the outstanding vocal personalities of the 20th century. "You do not hear Haefliger as a voice, but as a musician," wrote Jürgen Kesting in his compendium of great voices about the Swiss tenor, who came to international renown primarily as a soloist in Bach’s various “Passions and with his recordings of the Schubert cycles "Winterreise" and "Die schöne Müllerin. His repertoire ranged from Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn on to Stravinsky, Kodály and Janá 269;ek. Haefliger's high artistic and vocalistic level, which he was able to maintain until old age, extended to almost all genres. Ferenc Fricsay found him to be the perfect cast for roles such as Tamino and brought the singer to Berlin, where Haefliger soon became a member of the legendary Mozart ensemble of the Municipal Opera. This selection of original albums from 1955 to 1962 contains famous recordings of the Mozart operas "The Magic Flute", "Don Giovanni" - both under Fricsay - as well as Beethoven's "Fidelio" (in short versions). Haefliger set standards as Florestan even valid today. The exceptional quality of his graceful and fresh lyrical voice and his fine musical intellect are also evident on the other original albums with song repertoire by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms and the fine examples of his work with Karl Richter and the Munich Bach-Ensemble.
