This recording contains compositions carefully selected around the life and work of Augustin Barrios, one of the 20th century's greatest composers of music for the guitar. It gathers together some of his own pieces, influential works by other Spanish composers of his time, and later works by guitarists from the New World on whom he had a profound effect. Among the featured composers are Villa-Lobos, Moreno-Torroba, and Tarréga. The music is performed by the award-winning Dutch soloist Enno Voorhorst.
The guitarist/composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré died almost seventy years ago. A new generation of artists now champion his work, and Barrios ´ compositions are now standard in the curricula of nearly every guitar conservatory in the world. In this recording, Dutch guitarist Enno Voorhorst brings together works written by Barrios as well as composers whose work has been influenced by him, including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Julio Salvador Sagreras, Antonio Lauro, Federico Moreno-Torroba, Francisco Tarréga and Emilio Pujol.
This recording represents soloist Enno Voorhorst's debut on Challenge Classics. During a highly successful career to date he has been the recipient of several awards, including 1st prize at the 1987 International Guitar Competition in Hof (Germany), the Dutch Guitar prize in 1992, and 1st prize at the Seto-Ohashi Competition in Japan.
