Following on from the success of their EP, Anglo-Scottish duo Janice Burns & Jon Doran are back with their debut album, No More the Green Hills. Made up of primarily traditional material, the album is inspired by the living and breathing nature of folk songs, which constantly evolve as they pass from singer to singer, and place to place.
The defining themes of the album came together as the duo started arranging False True Love: "Working on the song we felt that spark of connection between the text, the music and our voices, and a connecting of the dots of the types of songs we'd been collecting. These were songs of love, loss, and nature, and how we navigate through our complicated relationships with them. "
In telling these stories, Janice and Jon place harmony singing at the forefront, using guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, harmonium and double bass to create a nostalgic, dream-like landscape. The duo worked with Andy Bell (producer) and Ben Nicholls (double bass) to elevate each song, capturing their vision of a contemporary, yet timeless sound.
The album cover features artwork by printmaker Laura Boswell. Listening to the duo's music, she created the design with colours inspired by the sounds and themes of their songs. Through this creative process, two art forms have combined to create something truly beautiful.
