Description
Following the double-A side single 'Full Moon/ Black Hole' U's next release is the substantial 8-track 'Life Isn't A Fountain?', U's debut EP on LEX Records.
U's output genuinely defies categorisation. Slotting into the broad genre classifications of techno, hip-hop and experimental electronica while never fully pledging allegiance to any. Perhaps, strictly, U should be more methodical selecting records yet invariably drifts towards current musical, historical, anthropological and artistic obsessions. These inclinations have transported U to the grand orchestras of 18th century Vienna (Why Did I Pick Vienna To Use As A Metaphor For Rest of Your Life?' LP, Where to Now?), sordid warehouse raves ('Ecstasy' EP, Phantasy Sound) , the break up of the giant, unified landmass that would become Europe ('Lowlands' EP, Where to Now?) and further back still to the primordial sludge with a neanderthal chug that strains towards the sun and halcyon warmth of Berlin's Love Parade 'Parade/ Watchers' (EP, Phantasy Sound) . It has been mooted that the electronic splicing and reorganisation of these moments in history may even point to future events.
The fascination that has inspired the cohesive collection of recordings for 'Life Isn't A Fountain?' and provided a wealth of sonic gold dust for U to tweak and rework is the outer fringes of British post-punk, new wave and progressive rock, and all of the minute offshoots that sprang from this era, where recorded material was abundant and yet abandoned as musicians and listeners alike strove to find the next sound. U has traced these threads through their record collection and exhumed a wealth of source material to alter into this intriguing reflection on the peripheries of pop music, designed to portray a sense of gleeful mental imbalance teetering on the edge of hysteria.
