  • Description

This is an ambitious album, the first of its kind and musical concept, an octet of hymns, selected from different cycles of byzantine religious ceremonies, arranged and interpreted in a jazz context, totally complex, rich in polyrhythms, piles of harmonies and vocal melismas. Featuring trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and pianist Florian Weber.

The Albanian singer Eda Zari was educated in classical opera and has had a successful worldwide career in this field, performing from Carnegie Hall in New York to Tirana, Albania and other Western European cultural centres like Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin before becoming involved closely with Byzantine music and jazz.

She picked an excellent and experienced ensemble to present her vision. Pianist Florian Weber who follows his career in Europe, the USA and Japan with fine success arranged the traditional Byzantine hymns brilliantly in a jazz context. Lebanese quarter tone trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf has been the solid surprise in dozens of European festivals in recent time. Hayden Chisholm stems from New Zealand and has released many albums under his name, Dietmar Fuhr is an excellent German jazz bassist and percussionist Rhani Krija needs no introduction, he handles the drum chair for years with Sting.

The 24 page booklet written by eminent Albanian musicologists explain in detail the background of the project and the Byzantine roots.
