Description
Although its theme song, Unchained Melody, sold in its millions and has gone on to become one of the most recorded songs of all time, the movie from whence it originated, "Unchained" (1954), was a relatively obscure film-noir about a convict in a medium security prison, the leading role played by American footballer Elroy 'Crazylegs' Hirsch, who'd never acted before.
This unique compilation presents twenty-nine different versions of 'Unchained Melody', across a wide range of musical styles.
It includes the four biggest 'original' 1954 American hits, by Les Baxter, Al Hibbler, Roy Hamilton and June Valli, as well as Jimmy Young and Liberace's successful UK cover versions, while the 'original' movie soundtrack clip features Todd Duncan.
Rock & Roll is represented via Gene Vincent, Ricky Nelson, Conway Twitty and Duane Eddy; Doo-Wop by The Teddy Bears, The Fleetwoods and The Blackwells; R&B/Soul by Sam Cooke, Tony Middleton, Steve Alaimo, Bobby Day and Gerry Granahan; Country by Chet Atkins, Marty Robbins, The Browns and Floyd Cramer; UK Pop by Cliff Richard and Frank Ifield; MOR by Mantovani, Pat Boone, Andy Williams and The Lettermen.
