Description
The first ever recording of Karol Mikuli's songs and cantata brings the audience closer to the achievements of the currently underestimated composer and outstanding Chopinist associated with Lviv. Mikuli, a disciple of Chopin himself, a well-known and respected director of the Galician Music Society, is not inferior to Schubert or Schumann, to whom he looked up while composing his songs.
Clearly referring to their output, as far as the genre is concerned, his songs represent Romantic music of German-speaking composers. Dedicated to the representatives of the Lviv social elite, they are not salon music, but artistic songs of the highest standard. Both the vocal and piano parts are very demanding.
Baritone Witold Zoladkiewicz and pianist Gabriela Machowska complement each other in an excellent, nuanced interpretation, expressing their passion for chamber music. The late Romantic cantata in a version with string quintet proves not only the ease with which Mikuli operates a diverse ensemble, but also his sense of drama.
