New on the Stage Door Pop imprint is the debut CD release of 'Discolongamax', the Max Bygraves disco album.
By 1979, disco was at its peak with artists from across the musical spectrum embracing the genre. And Max Bygraves was no exception. The veteran British entertainer released 'Discolongamax' in September 1979, continuing his popular "Sing-a-longa" series, the album featured a selection of classic songs, brought up to date with glittering disco arrangements. Produced by Terry Brown, arranged by Frank Barber ("Disco Bond") and backed by "The Ladybirds", highlights include Max's disco versions of 'Get Me to the Church on Time', 'Ma! He's Making Eyes at Me', 'Somebody Stole My Gal' and 'Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey'. The album also includes new versions of Bygraves' chart hits 'Tulips from Amsterdam' and 'You Need Hands'.
Commenting on the album, Bygraves said in 1979 "I firmly believe people of my age can enjoy disco as much as the kids. The songs are all good strong melodies that seem to lend themsleves to the disco treatment. I just hope that the folk who buy the album will feel like a bit of a dancealong too."
On its release, Music Week reported how "disco fever had affected dear old Max", praising his disco effort as being "just right for this time of year". While another reviewer questioned whether listeners could expect a "Punkalongamax" follow up!
