Description
The legendary tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, recorded live at Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen in 1974. The whole concert has never been made available to the public before, with just a few tracks ever being broadcast in Denmark.
Gordon's quartet includes his fellow Americans - the pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Ed Thigpen - alongside the local bassist Mads Vinding. The saxophonist displays his customary relaxed yet intense creativity, as they perform five original compositions by Gordon and the jazz standard "There is No Greater Love" by Isham Jones.
Dexter Gordon's most creative and prolific years were spent in Europe in the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s. Right until he returned to the USA in 1976 Dexter had performed frequently in Copenhagen's famous Montmartre Jazzhus. Many of the nights were broadcasted by Danish Radio and later released by SteepleChase in the 'Dexter in Radioland' series.
On Dexter's 2004 release 'Loose Walk' Chris Kelsey of JazzTimes wrote, "The gritty soulfulness of his playing reminds us just how much we miss the greats of his generation. They don't make 'em like this anymore."
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone), Kenny Drew (piano), Mads Vinding (bass), Ed Thigpen (drums)
