    Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is without doubt the most influential figure in the field of harpsichord in the first half of the seventeenth century. He left a vast legacy of compositions for the harpsichord and the organ, and these works proved fundamental to the evolution of both instruments. His distinctive writing style incorporated new ideas with stylistic flair, giving the performer the ‘toccatistic’ and imaginative freedom typical of the Renaissance period. The works are imbued with a variety of musical expression, and it is in this art of variation that Frescobaldi excels, forging a path between the sacred and the profane.
